Exercise Attention Span & Sour Pancakes?

Good morning! I got all my work done so I'm going in late today which means you get an early morning blog entry from me...lucky you :)

Lately I've had no attention span when it comes to exercise. I've been exercising, very consistently, but I can never do the same thing more than a few times. Even spinning, which I love, I rarely attend more than once a week. I tried to do the daily yoga challenge, and though I am still plugging away pretty frequently, I find myself trying out different yoga videos, different poses and even mixing in some pilates. Last night I went to do "Yoga Sculpt" On Demand and I suddenly couldn't find it (I'm hoping it was just a fluke and today it will appear again). I decided to try Pilates instead and did a 20 minute Total Body Pilates video. I loved it! It began by focusing on the stomach muscles, moved into the butt and upper thighs and finished with some back exercises. I think I must work the stomach and upper thighs in other work outs that I do because it was mainly my back muscles that were sore later. The only thing that annoyed me about the video was when the pilates girl, Nicole Stewart, would talk in the same rhythm she wanted us to be breathing in...really unnecessary. I will definitely be doing this video again, but I do look forward to when I can mute it, no offense Nicole :)

I used to be a big pilates girl long before the interest in yoga, spinning and many of the other things that I do now. I started doing pilates in high school and actually got pretty good when I was going consistently in Australia. For some reason I can't seem to find a pilates class at my gym that works for me time wise, but I'm hoping to incorporate more at home if I can. At least for a few weeks, then I'll probably have a new obsession. What's your exercise attention span like? Do you tend to stick to one activity or change it around all the time?

On a completely unrelated note I'm having a major baking issue and I'm hoping one of you can solve it for me. My mom has been making these delicious oatmeal pancakes forever and when I moved out I took the recipe and started making it for myself. Everything went well, they were delicious, I was happy. Then, one day I made the pancakes using the same recipe and they had this TERRIBLE sour aftertaste to them. I thought I did something wrong so I tried again a few days later and the same thing happened. My mom and I blamed bad baking powder, so I got a new one and tried again. Still terrible! I have tried making them probably five or six times since then and it's always this terrible taste. I have to know what the problem is, I really think all of my ingredients are fresh! The other VERY strange part to this story is that I made oatmeal apple muffins that use the same ingredients (plus additional ingredients), just different measurements and they always come out fine.

So I am going to post the recipe and please tell me if you have any ideas of what could be going so wrong!

Oatmeal Pancakes
1 egg (I use egg whites only, 3 tablespoons I believe)
1/2 cup plain non-fat yogurt
2 tbsp. oil
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Alright, you fantastic bakers out there- please tell me what I am doing wrong so I can make my favorite breakfast again!

  1. Sour taste? Could be too much baking powder, OR spoiled yogurt? Do you usually use yogurt in your pancakes? The sour taste from the yogurt could just be something you're not used to. Either way, this recipe sounds great!

  2. I hope you figure it out, Gina's advice was going to be mine so I won't be redundant! I do with you luck though!

  3. hmmm I'm gonna agree with Gina and go with the yogurt -- plain yogurt is notorious for having a sour taste in itself.. so that wasprobably to culprit! I'd add a little more sweetener next time -- or something to cut the sourness of the yogurt.. like pumpkin or mashed banana -- yum! hope second time is a charm :)

  4. You know, I have NEVER tried pilates, but I would love to.

I tend to get exercise ADD as well, which is why I am loving the variety right now of all kinds of workouts. Keeps things interesting.

  5. lol, right now I would give anything to go for a hip pain-free mundane 1 hr long run on the treadmill. I haven't been able to do anything except PT exercises for 2+ months. But I do know what you mean about the workout attention span--maybe you're getting burned out and need a little break. I like running and the elliptical, but those get old after a while so I like to go to tons of diff fitness classes (Kickbox, TKO, abs, plyometrics and weights, bootcamp, etc).

I'm guessing the plain yogurt may have had something to do with the sourness

  6. I'm going to say the same thing as everyone else, that it's the yogurt.

I have the same time issue with my gym. Why do they schedule the good classes during the day when I'm at work or much later in the evening when I'm getting ready for bed? Not everyone is a stay at home mom and I like to sleep!

  7. I'd say the yogurt too... maybe before you were using vanilla yogurt? Or maybe try using vanilla now?

Anyways that's really weird! I hope you figure it out!

  8. Not sure about the pancakes but I feel the same way about exercise UNTIL I get into a routine. Once I'm in a routine I'm good, for about 6-8 weeks, then I have to switch my routine up! Haha. Right now I do run/weights on Monday and Friday. Spin/run on Wednesday. Yoga on Tuesday/Thursday. Long run on Saturday and spin/yoga on Sundays :D

  9. hmm that recipe doesn't look like it should be sour at all! maybe the yog had done bad? or you used too much baking powder? very strange!

hope you get it figured out bc they sound great!

oh-the email you gave me about the boston sports women website got sent back to me saying that was in anvalid email hmmm

  10. Whenever I mess up those pancakes and they taste bad, they also LOOK weird. Are they full and fluffy like when mom makes them or are they like liquidy and stuff? You should make them in front of mom one time, when I come home! yay!

  12. pretty much when i try to do non-running workouts i have add... i am gung-ho for a week or two but then... major fadeout. hence my non-toned-ness and all :-/

  13. That is really odd!! No idea what could cause that!

I have a short attention span when I am running on the treadmill. I get bored very fast and those 4-6 mile runs feel like they take forever. But when I run outside, the runs go by so fast!!
