Goodbye to My First Car

If you had asked me a few weeks ago what I think about cars, I would've said "they get me where I want to go." This attitude continued while Eric quizzed me on what kind of wheels I want on my new car and other trivial things that I could care absolutely LESS about. Good gas mileage? Reliable? I'm sold.

But then on Saturday I went car shopping for new cars, made the commitment to buy one and suddenly became abnormally attached to my old car.

When I bought my car 5 years ago it was literally my dream car. As in, if you told me I had an endless supply of money to buy any car I wanted, I still would've bought this one. Of course I may have FIRST bought some crazy amazing car and then sold it to buy my Honda and keep the profit, but in the end I wanted my Honda Accord. It was the first car that was really mine. This attitude continues today.

So now I'm getting all sentimental about it...

*This car survived 2 years of being parked at BC with me. It endured my anger when I could never EVER find a parking space. It also endured my anger when I received my 100th parking ticket when I was literally unloading my car with all the doors still open and the door to my mod open. It tried to endure drunk and angry students but it did suffer a minor bruise from some annoying student once...not cool.

*It drove me to 2 different student teaching experiences. It even once got stuck in several feet of snow and had to be shoveled out by me and the other teachers at my student teaching placement.

*It drove me to Eric's house, saving us from the dreaded "long distance" relationship :)

*It drove me to my job interviews and I was in it when I got a call back to the job I have now.

*It drove my sister around for the summer I was in Europe.

*It drove me to my first day of my real job and every day after that for 3 1/2 years.

*It drove Eric and I to the Cape and didn't cost us an arm and a leg in gas :)

This car has been a constant in a totally crazy 5 years of life where I: moved five times, graduated college, got my first full time job, got my master's degree, started a relationship, got engaged, and bought a house. I guess I can see a little why I might be so attached to it.

But I had to say goodbye to it today, because I upgraded it to a Honda CRV. I know I'm going to love it soon...but right now it feels like I'm driving someone else's car...very weird. I guess thats probably what my house felt like on the first night, right?

Have you ever become abnormally attached to something you own? Haha, c'mon, make me feel better!

I'm off to go skype with my BFF while we watch American Idol. It's going to be like watching it in college again haha, once I get used to this whole skype thing...

  2. I know how you feel. I love my car (a 98 Toyota Camry), but I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford to buy my first brand new car. It won't be for awhile, but that's ok.

  6. I had such a hard time parting with my first car, too! Totally get it! I love that you took some pics. Now, enjoy those hot new wheels!

  7. I totally know what you mean! When we moved here, we sold my car (the first car I ever bought with my own money!) and took our other one with us. Even though I had been driving the Prius for the past year instead of my Saturn, I was SO sad to have to sell the Saturn. I LOVED It. I name my cars and always have a hard time parting!

  8. I'm only 21 and I've already had THREE vehicles. I know right? Bad driver up in here! Haha, I totally know what you mean about being attached to a vehicle though because even though I only had them for a short amount of time I was VERY attached to my last two vehicles before I got my latest car - which I'm hoping will last me for longer than 2 years! Lol

Can't wait to see your new car!

  10. I have a Honda Civic, and let me tell you, I understand your attachment!! When I walked outside a few months ago and saw that someone had hit it, I felt like they had hurt my best friend. Haha, seriously, I was really angry. Honda's truly are the BEST cars!! I mean for the money, you can't get anything better.
I have faith that you will really enjoy your new car though. I can't WAIT to see it!

  11. I haven't had to part with my first car yet, but I know I'll be sad when I do. I love my car. It's reliable, gets good gas mileage and when I moved from PA back to DC I could fit all my earthly belongings in it so I could do the move in one trip. I am in no way ready to part with my Taurus.

  12. I was teary when we got rid of our first car. It was the first big thing we bought together, I learned to drive standard on it, we drove to our honeymoon in it etc... It was just a little Cavalier but it was ours.

  13. I will not shed a tear if I ever get rid of my car - even though it was the first big purchase I made!

My car has given me nothing but trouble - I do have an emotional attachment to some of my pots and pans - the first things I bought when I moved out on my own for the first time.

  16. I gave my car to my parents when I moved to NYC, and let them keep it now that I'm in Boston. Everytime I go home I hug it. Seriously =)

  17. Congrats on the new car! but I know how you feel. I get very weird and emotionally attached to random items too. Even when I totaled my car, I was sad to get a new one. Haha, but I had no choice! So I got the same exact car, just a newer year!
