A Day Trip to Newport, RI

Why are vacations so infrequent, and yet, so much better than working?

Why do I insist on planning vacations like I plan a kindergarten day?

Why do wineries often have this gorgeous rustic feel?

Why are wine crackers so delicious?

Why did Eric look at a random 2 family house in Newport and ask me, "are these the mansions"?

Real mansions look like this...

Why can no natural beauty ever compare to the ocean?

Why do self timed pictures never quite come out right?

Why is Red Parrot the first restaurant I've seen that thinks to put the bread on top of the tomatoes so bruschetta does not get soggy?

Why did I love Newport Storm blueberry beer more than any of the wine I tasted today?

Why does a restaurant with this wall win me over before I even try the food?

Why is something seemingly random like 3 fried 3 steamed chicken and rice dumplings at an Italian restaurant so perfect for Eric and I to split?

Why does "no the stuffing in the mushrooms does NOT have anything other than lobster and crab meat" mean actually it has cheese but you can find that out after you order it because everyone loves cheese and everyone's stomach loves cheese even more than they do, right?

Why after hundreds of restaurant failures do I still not get that I just need to say I cannot eat cheese, even if I'm actually worried about mayo, but no matter what I should just say cheese, who knows what they may put cheese in? Why do I continue to expect that menus will say cheese given that according to USA Today, sixty percent of people are lactose intolerant?

Why can't cupcakes have the same amount of calories as celery?

  1. Great post!! Isn't Greenvale pretty? Last time I was there, there were 2 labs. Dogs + ocean views + wine make me a happy girl!

  2. i heard that if you eat the cupcake while standing on one foot it has no calories.

  3. Totally with you on the cheese. I'm not a lactard ( ;) ) but just don't LIKE much cheese. Yet restaurants try to sneak it into salads, sandwiches, etc.

    Looks like a fantastic day!

  5. Why can't chocolate have the same nutritional value as spinach?

I love that you planned your day trip like you plan for your Kindergarteners! That is so something I would do! :)

  6. I love Newport. The mansions are amazing! I did a walking ghost tour there last October, which was a BLAST. Next time you should stay a bit later and try to catch one!!

  8. cannot believe that you write things out like that!! whoa, girl! Type A much? LOL I am a planner and a Type A but i write my lists only in my brain, not on paper. That would take too much work! ha!
Anyway the babywearing and cosleeping glad that i could shed some new light and info. Yeah, get all that hashed out b4 you ever even have a baby.

As for snacks and food and choices...most americans think goldfish and yogurt in a tube are healthy snacks. They are not. So if choice is is apples and choice b is sugar snap peas, you either pick a or b. I can live with that. If c is goldfish, well, i could live with that, but that's not on the menu round here so no worries. And if it was, i wouldnt freak. Everything in moderation type of thing. I could never be a K-garten teacher..you are a wonderful woman!

  9. LOL your cupcakes-celery comment made me laugh. You know, if you eat enough celery it will be the same calories as a cupcake. So might as well save some celery and have the cupcake instead :)

  10. I love your list... and that wall would win me over too! You may not have realized this from my wine and cheese post, but I'm lactose intolerant. I'm of the belief that pretty much everyone is, but some people just don't want to admit it. We weren't meant to digest milk as adults, and even though I know that, I'll never give up cheese and ice cream!

  12. LOL - aw, sounds like a fabulous day trip though! Despite the cheese fiasco.

Why aren't cupcakes as good for you as celery? Someone needs to get on that!

  13. I love Newport. What a fun day :) Except for the cheese. I automatically say no cheese, no butter, very little oil when I order anything because all 3 can leave me with belly aches.

  14. Wouldn't that be AWESOME?! I'd eat cupcakes all day, and all night, with extra icing :)
This winery sounds like so much fun, and trust me, I would make an agenda just like you! That's the only way to make sure you take full advantage of your time, in my opinion. Regarding the beer, if it's anything like Bar Harbor Blueberry ale, I can agree with you that it tastes MUCH better than any wine available!!!

  15. Love the itinerary... I totally do that on vacation. Glad you had a nice day with some good eats (too bad about the mushrooms w/ cheese) and drinks!

  16. Sounds like a fabulous day. Sorry to hear about the stuffed mushroom snafu. How annoying. Living with food allergies/sensitivies is so tough. :(

Thanks for sharing all the photos! Makes me sort of yearn for the ocean!

  19. So many life mysteries :) Great post! This makes me want to go on a vacay really bad! And about the cheese - ah! So frustrating! Or anything with a restaurant. I cannot think of how many times I have asked for "NO cheese" - even on somethey they could EASILY omit (like a salad) and they come out and it's almost as if they put a "double order o cheese" on it!

Glad you are enjoying your vacation so much :) Looks gorgeous!

  20. Mmm, LOVE the Red Parrot.

Have you been to Sakonnet Vineyard before? It's my favorite stop on the RI Wine Trail.

  22. I love the Red Parrot! Bri was stationed there for a bit during Naval Justice School and it was the first place I tried oysters, which I now love. I also agree on the wine crackers. Amazing!

  23. The "self-timed pictures" comment made me laugh out loud... too funny ;)

And I'm kind of happy to see that I'm not the only one who plans out my vacations in such detail!! :D
