Day for Fun, Night for Sleep

My name is Kelly and I have a confession to make.

I really really really dislike going out at night. No, I don't mean I dislike going out to dinner, or I dislike going to bars in general. Truthfully, I actually like bars most of the time. I enjoy dancing. I enjoy a couple of drinks. The issue is truly the night part. This weekend I went to bed at 10:30 on Friday night and woke up at 7. Last night I went to bed at 2am and still woke up at 7. That is what my body is going to do. So if I stay up until 2am I just feel exhausted and terrible the next day.

If it was up to me, social events would be different. All social events would begin no later than 4pm, the earlier the better. Brunch with friends? Absolutely. Afternoon BBQ? I'm there. Day time pub crawl? Sign me up. Then, the early start time would not be an excuse to still stay out until after midnight, but rather an excuse to be home in bed by 11pm.

I know this makes me sound like I am 76 instead of 26, but I don't care. I have TWO days of a seven day week that I get to enjoy and do what I want, I don't want to spend one of them exhausted and feeling disgusting.

I do realize that the world does not revolve around me. I know that a lot of people like nights and enjoy being out at night. I know that some people don't like drinking at 1 in the afternoon, or going to bed early. I know that some people work on weekend days and wouldn't be able to attend social events unless they were at night. I know that when it's my birthday or event that I get to decide what time it starts at (or Katie throws me a party at 3:30 in the afternoon because she knows me so well). I know that when it's not my birthday or event I don't get to decide. I do know this. So I will continue to begrudgingly attend social events that begin at 7 or 8 at night (and be thankful that they no longer start at 11 like when we were in college!). But will I like it? No.

Did I have fun? Of course I did.

Yes Eric does look like the most ridiculous person there. But I can promise you, he was not.

They are resisting bunny ears behind us. Yes, my social life is a lot like my job.

So, did I have fun? yes.

Would I have had the same amount of fun and more today if the party had been at 2 or 3 in the afternoon? Yes.

Anyone with me? At least I will fit in nicely at the age of 76...

PS. Just for the record, I was not always a grandmother. I have always been an early bird at heart, but there was a time when I would stay up late with no regard for how I would feel the next day. However, those days are over.

  2. I hate how people like "can't go out" or "can't start drinking" until 10pm. Like why? Who wrote these rules? Why sit around and wait till it gets "late enough"? Why not start early and end early. That's my thoughts on the subject

  3. I'm definitely the same way and if I make it to 7am I feel pretty good about myself, which means I HAVE to be in bed by midnight!

  4. I am SO with you on this. While I will sleep in later after a night out, then I am crabby about wasting those morning hours asleep when I could have been enjoying more of my weekend.

  5. I'm with you. Although I have no problem sleeping in later if I need to, I generally just like being in bed by about 11pm at the latest. I really prefer 10pm, however. :-)

  6. I feel the exact, same way. I have no troubles sleeping in except to cram in all the fun things I want to do in a weekend plus all the necessary evils (cleaning, laundry, cooking, grocery shopping), I can't sleep till noon.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE being in bed by 10 pm - 9:30 pm makes me smile even more.

There is nothing wrong with it I have decided - although my husband continues to make fun of me for my early bed time.

  8. Kelly it's SO IRONIC that you just posted this because I swear Nick and I just had this conversation LAST NIGHT!! We both agreed that it's crazy how we used to go out at 9pm or 10pm, but how now we would much rather go out at around 5pm or 6pm, then be home by 10:30pm so we can get in our comfy clothes :) We both agreed that it doesn't make us losers, it just means we are normal people with 40-50 hour/wk jobs who just can't handle the late hours anymore! I mean, it sounds really nerdy, sure, but I think we're the cool ones, and the people who go our all the time are the LOSERS! hehe, no, jk, like you said it's fun every once in a while, but sleep is just more important!

  9. I am the EXACT same way. I suck at staying out late!! And last night, I was out until 2 for the first time in like months. So today, I am absolutely exhausted and pretty much a total waste. I have done nothing but lay on the couch pretty much - from the late night and from running 20 miles yesterday!

Glad you had a fun time, though!!

  10. Me too! I really enjoy calling it an early night so I can get up at a decent time the next morning without feeling like a total zombie. Luckily my friends don't give me *too* hard a time about it!

  11. Even though I also dislike LATE nights because I am usually up early in the mornings, my body does not rebel quite like yours does. If I go to bed at 2 am my body will usually let me sleep until at least 9 or 10 :-)

I like the ideas of Kelly world though. I agree all fun things should start at 4 pm and end by 10:30 pm! Glad tyou guys still had a fun time!

  12. I am so with you on this!!! I went to bed at 2 both Friday night and Saturday night, and woke up at 8:30 both days. And now, I (obviously) can't get to sleep at my regular 9:30 bed time... But at least it means we had fun, right> ;)

  13. I am the same way! I love meeting up with people, but I am not a night person and would much prefer meeting up earlier rather than later. I will wake up at 7am or before regardless of when I go to bed. Its just the way my body works. Even in college. Definitely not alone in this one!

  14. I am right there with you! Must be the teacher in us! I too feel like crap after a late night out!

How about those parties that start at 9 or 10pm? YUCK!
