Bring it 2013

The holidays and vacation came and went, and just that like my alarm went off in the pitch black this morning and I was back at work. Good thing those kiddos are cute is all I can say.

A year ago when I did my first post of 2012, I decided to focus only on monthly goals. This worked really well for me so I plan to do it again. I do have a couple of big goals for this year including reading 40 books (which may get up to 50 again if I end up reading as much), going on a big trip this summer (maybe) and trying lots of new fun things. But, overall I plan to stick to my monthly goals and challenges which seems to work best for my short attention span.

I don't know if this will be interesting to anyone else, but this school year my professional goal is actually to make my students make monthly goals (3 times during the year, one math goal, one writing goal and one reading goal). In November, we tried our first one- the kids made math goals. Some examples were: learn to count to 100 (or 30, depending on where they began), learn the number combinations to 10 (like 2 and 8 more is 10), learn to count by tens or fives, identify teen numbers etc. The whole month I made a huge deal of it, held daily practice sessions, got the parents involved, etc. In the end, almost every kid met their goal and it was pretty cool to watch. This month we are doing writing goals. The kids are pretty excited, and actually wanted to know today if I met my reading goal for 2012, even though I'm not sure if they possibly comprehend the concept of one year or how long it takes to read an adult book, ha ha.

January is going to be a busy month for me, but I have some goals in mind:

Last year I really jumped off the blogging bandwagon, and I'd like to get back into it this year. I'm starting easy with 2 posts per week, but considering I wrote 3 in the month of December total, that's a big step in the right direction. I hope you will check in and say hi!

What are some goals you have for the upcoming month or year? Do you work well with goals or do you prefer to just see where life takes you?

  1. My goal for January, which I didn't post on the blog because with all the excitement of resolutions I totally forgot about my monthly goals, is to pick out my outfit and pack for morning the night before. I used to always do this.. I don't know what happened. College: building bad habits one year at a time.

I like your goals! Especially YOGA!

  2. I love your goals. I need more goals in my life because I, too, have fallen off the face of the blogging world...oops. Baby and dissertation=no free time for blogging! My main goal is to finish my dissertation this year, but I also want to get back into exercising and read more! I just read Gone Girl have you read it??

  3. Your goals sound great! I like how you put them in your planner on post it's like that. I thought about maybe putting my goals/resolutions on post its at the end of each month so I can be reminded to go back and reflect!

I do work well with goals, much better than I have in the past. This year my goals are to read 75 books, run 13 races and .... find a teaching job! Eeep!

  5. Oh is that an Erin Condren planner? I bought one today for the first time!

As for my January goals - to stick to my exercise regimen, eat all raw once a week, and take time to meditate and pray.

  6. Those are a great set of goals. And I like that you also bought another Erin Condren planner. I love mine. :)

I set goals for the year - just 3 big ones that I will be posting about on Monday. So I don't have any specific goals for January besides getting CFA studying off on the right foot (which I have so far by hitting my hour goals). My only other goal is to go ice skating with Phil before they take down the free Wells Fargo rink in St. Paul!

  7. I love the Post-its in the Erin Condren planner. I was so excited that Jason surprised me with another one for Christmas. I really love them and defn use mine every single day.

I'm working on monthly goals this year as well. There is so much I want to accomplish.

Let's start talking about your big summer trip...haha. I just love discussing travel with you :)

  8. I think breaking down resolutions into monthly goals is smart, it's way easier to achieve results that way. Usually I'd make one resolution and make a plan for it and it worked. I think teaching your students about goal setting is a great idea.

  9. I am aiming for 50 books this year but my goals for January are:f
    1. Read 4 books
    2. Drink more Water
    3. Try new veggies
    4. Organize Laundry Room

So far, I've read 2 books, the water is not doing so hot, need to look into new veggies still and I have ideas for the laundry room, just need to act on them!

  10. I am switching to monthly goals this year too! Inspired by you! I just think it's hard to set goals for an entire year when life can change so much over that amount of time! I like the idea of writing my monthly goals on post-its and sticking them in my planner like that too!
