Lots to Say on Sunday

Tonight is your last chance to enter the Barney Butter Giveaway! I will use the Random Number Generator to pick a winner and announce it in the morning :)

Cape Adventures
Today was a rainy and dark day at the Cape, but Eric and I have been excited to be down here for too long to let that get in our way! We decided to do some indoor & fun exercise: ice skating. After a bad experience attempting to skate with a pair of skates that don't fit, I got smart and invested $16.99 in a used pair of ice skates that actually fit. Today was my first day skating with them and I was so relieved to find that I did not forget how to ice skate! (I figured skated for 9 years and played hockey after that- so I better know how to skate). Eric and I were able to weave with the best of them and believe me, weaving was necessary at public skating on vacation week, oh boy!

There was a point where Eric and I started to get concerned about seriously hurting the little kids. Look how much bigger Eric is...

But not too concerned to take weird slanted pictures of me...

Once things got really crazy (as in, there was no where to even weave anymore) we decided to head out. But we will definitely be back. Hyannis has TWO gorgeous new skating rinks, so we have to take advantage. Our hometown (which is a big skating town) could only dream of such a beautiful facility.

What is your favorite active thing to do that counts as "exercise"?

Wedding Program Plans
On another note, I'm doing some thinking about my wedding programs (on my list of wedding related things to do this vacation). I came across this cute programs you can do that also act as fans.

(photo from Etsy store Fairy's Loving Creation)

Since my wedding will be outside in July, thoughts? The only major negative I can think of is that they won't really fit into a purse, so people may be less likely to take them home. But then again, do they just go in the trash at home anyways? I also may have slightly less space but then again, what really needs to go on a program? Would love to hear your thoughts...

Pleasure Reading

Like everyone, I never have enough time to read all the books I want to. I am trying to catch up big time while I am on vacation. Today I finished Things I Want My Daughters to Know by Elizabeth Noble.

I had read her other book The Reading Group so when PinkFlipFlops reviewed the book on her blog, I knew I had to read it.
Next, I am going to read a book called Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky.

It is not something I would typically read for fun to be honest, but it was given to me by one of my student's mom and I want to at least give it a try. I tend to be stubborn in my book (and movie) choices and sometimes when I force myself to try something out of my comfort zone, I am happily surprised. If it doesn't go well, I am going to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

What books are you reading right now? Any recommendations?

  1. Oh my gosh I'm terrible at ice skating! I usually spend most of the time hanging onto the wall. I love dance with my kiddo for "exercise". I usually work up a sweat. Wish I had time to read :/

  2. I am literally the worst ice skater on earth. If I can stand still on ice for more than 5 seconds, it's a miracle!

I love the wedding programs! They are vibrant and colorful -- so perfect for the summertime :) I vote yes!

  4. I think the wedding programs are really cute! Congrats on your upcoming wedding. I kinda miss the planning.

We kept ours simple and only included the bridal party and parent names and then an explanation of our ceremony and a small Thank You on the back.

  5. Aw, those ice skating pictures bring back so many memories. We had a skating rink in our local mall and my brother and I would go ALL the time. It's so much fun!

  6. Oh ice skating, fun!! I haven't done that in years.

I like the programs, a lot, and I think most programs are bigger than women's purses. Women bring small purses to weddings, therefore most prgrams won't fit....right?? I say go with them if you like them, it's your wedding! And, for an outside wedding they look perfect.

  7. I may want to borrow both of Elizabeth Noble's books. Although I have like a million books lined up to be read. I just finished Testimony, I actually liked it a lot!
Skating looks fun! Should me and Chris bring out skates down?

  9. I loved Suite Francais! I just finished rereading "A Secret History" which I LOVE! I'm a crazy library girl. I go once a week and check out 5-7 books. What can I say? I'm a fast reader!

  10. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is very good - harsh, but good! Plus it's a trilogy so you will get much more ;)

I'm currently reading The Road, after reading some French books :)

  13. I just got the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and tried to start it in CT, but was not super impressed. I switched to a much easier read for the plain ride and I will try it again when I am done with It's Not all Flowers and Sausages.

  17. I loved Suite Française, but I read it in French so I'm not sure how the translation is. Somebody gave it to me in English, but I haven't read it yet...
I think it just depends on your interests...I was a French minor and WWII era France is really interesting to me. Plus, Irène was a very important author...there's something so special about the fact that these were her drafts for a planned 5 work volume and that they were never published. They sat unread by her daughter in a notebook for 50 years! I know the French version includes her notes and some letters back and forth (I'm not sure if the translation has these?).
Let us know how you like it! I'm just starting "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" by Jamie Ford.

  18. Right now I'm reading The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. It isn't too bad. Not my usual book style but it works. My commute to work just got longer so I'm thinking about trying those books on tape. I'm wondering if they're any good.

  19. I haven't been ice skating in so long! It looks like a blast (minus the potential for injuring little ones!). :)

I really like the fan-program idea. I went to a few weddings last summer during which it would have been very handy!

  20. I really like the fan program idea - super cute! Don't think about whether they will put it in their purse or not. What I usually do it put them in my car between the ceremony & reception, so if they want to save it, they can do that?

I have Suite Francaise & have read the other 2. The other 2 are both great reads! I bought SF when it first came out and just never got around to reading it. It is supposed to be really good.

I just started "Downtown Owl" by Chuck Klosterman. He's a pretty well-known author that is from my teeny tiny town (population 500). I just started it last night & am really liking it - it's loosely based on my hometown so it's really fun trying to figure out who all the characters are based on!!
