It's no secret that I have always been a peanut butter girl. I'm pretty sure I had wheat bread with peanut butter every day for breakfast for probably 5 or 6 years. However, when I started to have problems with my tummy a few years ago, I began to explore other breakfast options and spreads for bread.
I learned that almond butter had less saturated fat than peanut butter and more fiber, so that was one of the things I tried. For the past two years I have been getting my almond butter at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's so I was really excited to try a new kind of almond butter: Barney Butter!
You can read all about Barney Butter here, but in a nutshell Jennifer Barney started making Barney butter herself because she was sick of having to mix the almond butter you buy in stores so that the oil was not on top. She first shared it with family and friends, who named it "Barney Butter." I have to admit I'm a bit of a sucker for a good small business start up story.
So how does Barney Butter compare to the other almond butter I've been eating? Well #1- I have to admit the oil does come to the top sometimes on my other almond butter and that does annoy me, so I'm pretty happy I won't have to deal with that with Barney Butter! #2- Barney Butter has 3 grams of fat less than my Trader Joe's almond butter (same serving size!) and 1 gram of a fat less than Whole Foods. Not bad, huh? Barney Butter is comparable in price to the Whole Foods almond butter (that 10 oz. jar cost me $4.99), but Trader Joe's does charge the same price for a larger jar.
I tested out my new Barney Butter this afternoon as a pre work out snack. I spread some on an english muffin for the taste test...
The first thing I noticed was that Barney Butter has a different texture than other almond butters I've tasted. It looks and feels a lot more like peanut butter, and it was very smooth. The taste was REALLY good. I think the taste was pretty similar to other almond butters (which I just love in general), but the texture gave it that extra something that just made the whole thing really yummy. If I hadn't had to make it through a tough spinning class, I would've considered having another one...but that is what tomorrow's breakfast is for!
Not only did I get to enjoy a delicious and healthy snack, but there is even better news. Jennifer Barney herself has agreed to giveaway two jars of Barney Butter (a smooth, and a crunchy) to one of my lucky readers! Almond butter is SO good, but it has a reputation for being very expensive, so what could be better than winning some???
Here is what you need to do to win...
